(Unit 13) My Experience

My Experience

From my previous blog posts, you can see I've been researching bands that I take inspiration from, specifically shoegaze and noise pop bands such as My Bloody Valentine and julie. However, when it comes to lyrics, I want to experiment and be different from the usual shoegaze genre where I feel the lyrics are usually quite random and have a low vocal mix. My goal is to put my own twist on the genre and try to explore how more powerful lyrics could fit in.

On the topic of lyrics, I've found one of my biggest problems musically is writers block. Despite having a topic or spark of inspiration I still find it difficult to get these thoughts out onto the paper. Even when I was writing for my band Glass Star I often found myself struggling to make lyrics that truly satisfied me. I want to try writing stories within my songs based on how the instrumental sounds to me as I feel this will help me. I decided to try a few writing exercises to get past my writers block that I found online at how to write songs

The first exercise I tried suggested thinking of a word (I chose city) and choosing a word relating to that, then a word related to that one and so on. Eventually, once you have 10+ you can take the words and try to form some lyrics, I thought this exercise worked pretty well and challenged my ability to make lyrics.

Next up was an exercise where I chose an object and set a timer for 10 minutes. I then wrote down as many facts and bits of information I knew about the object. At the end it says you might end up discovering something like a metaphor which you can use in future work.
