Planning the Gig
Despite attending gigs, being a promoter is a completely new challenge for me but something I wanted to take on and try for my final project in order to learn these new skills that will help me even afterwards within the music scene. Down below I'm going to provide evidence of my conversations with ~Jordan from Bunkhouse and update them as we go. I also previously contacted Elysium for a gig but they didn't have the week I required available so I instead booked a gig with them for June.
So here is the initial correspondence between Jordan and I where he informed me May the 21st was available which was perfect as I needed it as close to the deadline as possible since I'll need all songs ready rehearsed and mixed and mastered to put onto the cassette tapes.
Here we are discussing the equipment and what I'll need to bring. The only item I'll struggle with is drum breakables so if I can't find any for a reasonable price soon I may utilise the colleges resources and ask if I can borrow theirs for the performance. I have also been struggling to find a good support band so far as the two bands I have asked are unfortunately on hiatus due to exams. Edit: I've spoken to my tutors for help and they've informed me that there's a great first year band who also need to play a gig for their project so I'm very lucky to be able to have them as support!
Up to here are emails about how the night will progress and the timings as well as the line-up. I believe both flatcat and purple waters will be co-headlining and we'll have Rex as our opening. I'm super glad I've been able to learn more about what it takes to put on a gig.
Meet the Line-up
For the gig I'm putting on, there will be a line-up of three bands including my own so I can showcase the EP I've wrote and recorded. The line-up consists of Purple Waters, flatcat and Rex. I wanted us all to be around college age as I like giving other young people the opportunity to have fun and play gigs alongside me as it can be difficult to mesh with older, more experienced bands sometimes. I also thought picking people around my ages was smart as it's a Wednesday which means it's student night so a lot of young people will want to come out to town anyway for the cheaper drinks, meaning bunkhouse isn't out of their way. Anyway, I'm next going to write a bit about each of the bands
Purple Waters
Purple Waters is an alternative rock band from South Wales who have been making a name for themselves as of late. They want to to spread their songs and passion of music to everyone they can and I think they're a very solid band who mesh together extremely well. The line-up consists of Issac (vocals and guitar), Sofia (bass), Rowan (guitar) and Ben (drums).
flatcat
flatcat is my band that has been created for my final project. We have shoegaze and noisepop influences and are learning to mesh to create our own sound where we can blur the lines between dreamy and distorted. Our line-up consists of Charlie (vocals and bass), George (guitar), Maisie (guitar) and Morgan (Drums).
Rex
Meet Rex! They're a indie band formed in Llwyn Y Bryn last year. Despite being in their first year, they've already improved so much and I can't wait to see their performance on the 21st. Rex has recently produced a CD which is available in store around Swansea, an amazing accomplishment for any band, especially first years! Their line-up consists of Dave (vocals and guitar), Jack (guitar) and Darcie (drums) will a possible bassist to be announced soon!
