Unit 8 - Drowning In Flames - Lyrics
This is our newest song, that we’ve created specifically for the final project EP. We knew from the start of this project that we wanted to create a four-song EP but we didn’t want to just use tracks we’d created before, we wanted to take this time to really focus and explore our music and then create a track that reflects that. As of late, I’ve been practicing and attempting to add a flair of loudness to my vocals as well as an ever so slight rasp since I think I have a very soft and gentle sound usually, which doesn’t really fit the type of music I currently enjoy making. So this new song has been an opportunity to explore this change and put my practice to use. With its heavier sound, I knew I had to create more dramatic lyrics, but this song is the one I struggled most to make words to. Finding a tune came quite easily once we’d created a structure but I really did struggle with lyrical inspection or a lack thereof. After quite a few drafts, and even some mindmaps, I ended up with a set of lyrics I’m quite happy with. Particularly in the second verse, I tried using the same line throughout with just a few word changes as I liked the effect of just a slight change in meaning. This song, despite its heavier sound, I actually wrote about being a people pleaser. When people have wronged you or hurt you, you push it off and claim it doesn’t matter and this is where my phrasing ‘serve my heart on a platter’ comes into play. You obviously can’t actually serve your heart as that would be extremely harmful to oneself and result in death but that’s what I mean, if the person this song is directly towards asked for it, the ‘singer’ wouldn’t hesitate despite the harm it would bring.
