Unit 10 - Ideas for my upcoming essay.

Initial ideas:

  • How AI is effecting music
  • The evolution of Shoegaze/ how it's changed in the modern day - could interview a local shoegaze band for this?
  • How has the digital world affected music
  • Traditional recording VS Digital recording's affect on creativity
  • The affect of music on mental health
  • The theory of subliminal messages being disguised within in music (not just in music videos, subliminal stimuli)
  • Something to do with 'selling out'
  • Misogyny in the more technical music jobs e.g. producing
  • How has music theory adapted alongside modern music
  • The struggle of local bands/venues
  • Why do we find songs catchy? Like a hook, how do certain songs stick in our heads so easily
  • Music Therapy's ability to improve cognitive function, particularly in alzheimer patients

How AI is effecting music.

I could have a lot to write about here as it's a very current topic. AI has even begun to replicate famous singers voices making people within the music industry panic. Could discuss whether AI can potentially start taking over music, putting musicians out of jobs. Not sure what practical aspect I could try with this though.

The Evolution of Shoegaze

Talk about the inspiration for shoegaze. Move onto key bands such as my bloody valentine and when the genre was at its peak. Then compare to modern day shoegaze and perhaps the problems bands are facing as the genre declines. For practical research I could interview a local shoegaze band.

How has the digital world affected music

This essay would mainly focus on digital streaming platforms and how they affect with the artists. I could take about how little people are paid online for their work as a lot of these artists aren't live performers, digital streaming is where they make their only profit. Need to mention the positives though such as how easy it is to get your music noticed and around the world.

Traditional recording VS Digital recording and it's effect on creativity

Explain the differences between the two as well as the pros and cons. Note and investigate that some people think digital recording actually effects if not limits your creativity.

The effect of music on mental health

Talk about the idea that the kind of music can change your mental health for better or worse especially during your teen years where it can begin to effect you longterm. Research studies on this and perhaps provide my own input of how music has changed the mental health of myself or someone close to me.

The Theory that Subliminal Messages are being placed within songs

This is one I don't quite believe myself but find very interesting. As of late, I've noticed a growing amount of people sharing subliminal messages they have noticed or believe are present in mainstream songs. These are using negative and it's a whole conspiracy I could research. A good part to focus on would be how a lot of people believe these messages are mostly featured in songs for children who are obviously more susceptible to influence. Whilst I don't believe in this myself I think it could be a very interesting topic to research and learn more about.
