In Belgium 1962 Lou Ottens and his team of engineers were attempting to develop a newer, more advanced form of storage. They ultimately came up with what's called the compact cassette.

Late 1970s saw the cassette market boom aided by the release of the walkman.
In 1966 it arrived in America with Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt and Johnny Mathis among the first artists on tape.
By the late 1980s the market had dropped due to the rise of compact discs (CDs) and continued to do so in the 90s. By 2001 the cassette tape market share dropped to less than 5%.
