Music Journalism: 


  • Role: Often freelance, they create blogs and publish news about all parts of music ranging from concert reviews to the latest news. Also known as media criticism, it is all about the evaluations and your opinions on music. First coming to prevalence in the eighteenth century it provided commentary on what we now call ‘classical music’. Nowadays, with the widespread presence of the internet, music journalism is predominantly online making it an ideal job for those with technological competency.  

 

  • Salary: The average in the United Kingdom is £37,996 but it can differ dependent on your specialty. 

 

  • Qualifications: Although not always required, a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a similar field such as marketing greatly improves your chances of securing a career. Creation of an online blog or content related to music from a previous role/hobby is also greatly beneficial. You will need a portfolio highlighting your talents and previous work. 104 UCAS are usually required for the university course along with an extended diploma course containing DMM. 

 



Composer: 


  • Role: A music composer writes original music for many varied genres. These can include (but are not limited to) theatre, jazz, film, and video games.  

 

  • Salary: Generally, in the United Kingdom, the average composer salary is £38,588. However, this can vastly range from anywhere between £20,000 to £115,000! Of course, this depends on your experience and skill. 

 

  • Qualifications: You will need a degree in music composition, music theory or something similar, a master’s degree would be even better. You need the ability to play at least one instrument and singing ability would be an even bigger advantage. As with many other jobs, an existing portfolio of your skills is always beneficial. You will need to study an A level or B-Tec in music after obtaining at least 5 GCSE’s grade A*-C. Undergraduate courses, which are needed for the career, are also dependent on interview.
